It makes me glad to see Susan and Ed enjoying SCUBA so much, though I''ve known for years that they travelled often to dive new places. Susan didn't take to diving right away; the wet suit was constrictive, and off the beach, through waves, we had tough times learning to deal with the technology on top of nature. Even at the underwater park next to the Casino at Catalina Island, Susan had trouble relaxing enough to complete her certification dive with Ed, until he insisted that I take her out alone, without him. We went out, faces down, and she started to see the underwater beauty for the first time. We decreased boyancy and sank to the bottom, enjoying the kelp, the Garabaldi, and the other life around us. After about 15 minutes of just enjoying life under water, we settled and started going through the drills necessary to complete certification and now, relaxed, she went through them all without any problems and I'm so happy I was able to certify her and Ed that day, with no guess how much that one thing would mean. It was a small thing for a friend, but I'm glad I was a little part of it for both of them, 'cause it opened worlds for them that I'd never see except through their eyes. We all miss her, though reminded each year when we trim our Christmas tree with the ornaments she made and sent us.
